Greater international scientific collaboration is crucial if we are to slow down the predicted global rise of type-2 diabetes with the devastating health and economic implications which it would entail.
This special event builds on a cluster of 4 SICA projects – focussing on gene-environment interactions in diabetes/obesity in specific populations - stemming from the 2011 Health call, which each focus on a different regions of the world. It will gather high-level scientists and national funding agencies from across the globe to identify key research questions and to explore additional possibilities for international cooperation and partnerships to address them.
A working dinner (by invitation only) will conclude the first day of the conference. It will help prepare the four thematic workshops on day two and allow participants to discuss ideas for future research cooperation.
The themes discussed at the workshops will be as follows:
- Genetic aspects of type-1 & type -2 diabetes and obesity in specific populations, chaired by Prof. Nick Wareham, Institute of Metabolic Science, University of Cambridge, UK.
- Lifestyle and diabetes prevention programmes for minorities, chaired by Dr. Eric Ding, Harvard Medical School, U.S.
- Diabetes diagnosis and management in primary care in specific populations, chaired by Prof. Anoop MISRA, Chairman, Fortis-C-DOC Centre of Excellence for Diabetes, Metabolic Diseases andEndocrinology, New Delhi, India.
- Challenges of diabetes/obesity in pregnant women, chaired by Prof. Gernot DESOYE, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Medical University of Graz, Austria.
Background information on the parallel workshops is available on the conference website. Webstreaming will be available for day 1 of the conference.
